Adwaita Nayar’s Nykaa journey
Adwaita Nayar began her entrepreneurial journey at the age of 21. One of the founding members of e-commerce giant Nykaa and daughter of Nykaa’s CEO, Falguni Nayar has been instrumental in making Nykaa one of the industry leaders in the e-commerce space.
Adwaita is also responsible for the brand’s physical presence across the country, as she executed the opening of 30 retail stores before moving to Nykaa Fashion. And she is ready to succeed there too! The confident risk-taker opens up about working with her mother, her own business acumen, and the crucial lessons she’s learned so far.
When it all began in 2012-13, I had just graduated and returned to India. I agreed and agreed to be her ‘right hand’. It all started with a basic notion, and we continued to execute our ideas methodically over the next five years to bring Nykaa to where it is today.
Because success was not certain, the initial years were extremely difficult. Now I am grateful for that experience since it keeps me grounded in the knowledge that all businesses face difficulties. I was personally involved in the opening of our retail stores.
I travelled to many towns to better understand the market; for me, this was one of the most enriching experiences of my life because I was able to better comprehend the country and, hence, our consumers.
The experience gave me the same amount of confidence in knowing the retail industry as it did in e-commerce. Then, roughly two years ago, we launched Nykaa Fashion; credit goes to my mother, who persuaded us to enter that market. There is a chasm.
